Saudi Arabia, Politics, 1/30/2003
In a unique step encouraging the heated debate in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi crown prince has met with Saudi reformers who call for a larger amount of freedoms and elections for the Shura council in the kingdom.
A former University teacher, Abdullah al-Hamid, said in the capital Riyadh that a group of 40 Saudi intellectuals presented their thoughts and ideas to the crown prince last week, noting that this group gets greater support from Saudis demanding encouraging dialogue and the values of civilization in the Islamic society.
However, in his proposal to be officially submitted to the next Arab summit to be held in Bahrain this March, crown prince Abdullah called for increasing political participation.
