Egypt stresses tightened control on the Islamist groups
Egypt, Politics, 1/30/2003
The official spokesman for the Egyptian ministry of the interior said that Egypt has launched successful campaign against elements suspected to be active internally, ruling out the possibility of controlling activities by fleeing Egyptians abroad without the cooperation with the authorities of the countries where these Egyptians reside.
To this effect, the Egyptian official spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmad Omar Abu al-Saud criticized certain European states for not handing over the feeling persons, noting that the fleeing elements always seek to contact followers and associates inside Egypt.
He added that Egypt has repeatedly asked these countries to hand them over to Egypt, but the response was not sufficient except when the September 11 attacks took place, and by then, it was too late.
The Egyptian security official added that there are certain groups in Egypt which try to revive their activities, but the ministry of the interior is making great effort to eliminate all these groups and their leaderships.
