Iranian helping measures for Iraqi opposition forces to cross into Irbil
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 1/29/2003
The leading figure in the Iraqi opposition National Congress Ahmad al-Jalabi has stressed Iran's desire to ensure the travel of leaders of the Iraqi opposition to the city of Irbil in order to convene the first meeting of the opposition on the Iraqi territories since 10 years.
Despite Iran's opposition to attacking Iraq and its hostility for Washington, Tehran is playing an important role in hosting and supporting the Iraqi opposition groups.
In a press conference he had held in Tehran, al-Jalabi who has close ties with the American administration said "if the members ( of the opposition) will come via Iran, them they will not have problems entering northern Iraq."
Al-Jalabi explained that the "Iranian government had instructed its embassies to issue entry visas to members of the 65 members of the follow up committee." He added that "if those representatives want to cross the Iranian borders they will find no difficulty, even among them those officers who served in the Iraqi army during the Iraqi- Iranian war." Al-Jalabi indicated that he had constructive talks with the chairman of the Higher Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim, and with the Iranian officials."
Al-Jalabi considered that the report of the UN inspectors indicates that "Saddam still places obstacles before dismantling his weapons." He called on the international community to take necessary measures to force him to disarm.
