Mrs. Mubarak highlights Red Crescent role in protecting children
Egypt, Culture, 1/25/2003

Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, Head of the Egyptian Red Crescent stressed the important humanitarian role played by Red Crescent especially in protecting children against hazards they face.

This came in the speech delivered by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak on the opening of Meridian Cup being hosted by Egypt.

Mrs. Mubarak speech was delivered on her behalf by Minister of Youth and Sports Alieddin Hilal.

Eight national under 17 teams from Africa and Europe are competing in the event.

Mrs. Mubarak said that the Red Crescent has been always keen on raising the people's awareness of the deplorable conditions of the children involved in the armed conflicts.

Mrs. Mubarak warned of the grave consequences of wars, pointing out that children were taking the brunt of them.

Mrs. Mubarak said that losing the family's breadwinner to a war exacted heavy economic and social toll on society, noting that wars triggered off the problem of refugees and killed thousands of innocent children.

President of the Confederation Afrique de Football (CAF) Isa Hayato thanked Friday Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak for sponsoring Le Meridian football tournament, which kicks off Friday by a friendly match between Ajax Amsterdam and Al Ahli.

Speaking at a press conference, Hayato said the hoped-for match comes within the framework of the cooperation between the CAF and the United European Football Association (UEFA).

In the meantime, a member of the UEFA who is currently visiting Egypt to attend the matches, welcomed the participation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Crescent in patroning this year's tournament, as part of their noble efforts to promote a campaign to protect children from the scourge of war.

The governorates of Ismailia, Port Said and Suez are hosting Le Meridian tournament for junior teams of Egypt, France, Britain, Switzerland, Burkina Faso, Spain, Mali and Nigeria.
