Arab efforts to reconcile Sudanese coalition and the government
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 1/25/2003

There are signals that a meeting will be held between the Sudanese government and its opposition in exile under the supervision of the Arab League (AL).

The delegate for the AL, Nadia Makram, who is in charge of the Sudanese file, has been active in convening meetings with the leaders of the national coalition (the alliance of the opposition and the exile.) News reports said that the AL delegate to Sudan will be meeting today in Cairo with members of the four- member committee which is formed of the leaders of the coalition and members of the coalition delegation which will leave for Nairobi.

On Wednesday evening the delegate of the AL met with the chairman of the coalition Muhammad Othman al-Meirghani.

On the other hand and at a time when the leaderships of the Democratic Federal party ( al-Hizb al- Itihadi al-Dimoqrati) abroad persist on denying any contacts with the Sudanese government, the chairman of the Federal party and the chairman of the National Coalition delegated a personal envoy to take part in the celebration held by the Sudanese embassy in Cairo marking the Sudanese "National Day."

The media secretary for the coalition and the member in the Federal party Hatem al-Sirr defended the participation of Hassan Musaed, al-Meirghani's secretary, in the celebration by saying that there is a family kinship between him and ambassador Ahmad Abdul Halim and that he does not represent al-Meirghani in this occasion.
