Talks on the missing between Iraq, Kuwait ends without results
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 1/24/2003
Iraqi and Kuwaiti experts have ended two days of intensive talks in Amman yesterday under the patronage of the ICRC and with the participation of Saudi Arabian observers without reaching crucial results on the fate of missing and prisoners in each of the two states following the Gulf war in 1991.
The chairman of the Kuwaiti delegation Ibrahim al-Shahin said in conclusion of the second round of talks which he described as "the first meeting concerning discussion of detailed issues," that the "Iraqi side proposed nothing new concerning the fate of the Kuwaiti prisoners." He added that "time is still early to assess the extent of progress in these talks." On Wednesday the two sides held three "hot" work sessions during which the Kuwaitis and the Iraqis debated the file of the missing and prisoners. The Kuwaiti file includes lists and data on 600 prisoners considered by Kuwait as held by the Iraqi authorities while the Iraqi file talked about 1037 missing.
On the other hand, the UN coordinator concerning the issue of missing and properties in Kuwait, Yuli Forntsov, left Amman yesterday for New York after he had met with the heads of the Kuwaiti and Iraqi delegations to the talks.
