France and the finance construction of mosques
Regional-France, Religion, 1/22/2003
The French government envisions an amendment to the law of 1905 separating church from state in order to allow the financing of Mosques construction.
State secretary of justice real estate programs, Pierre Bedier, and government spokesman, Jean Fran¨ois Cope were quoted by "Le Monde" issued Saturday as voicing support for the amendment of the 1905 law, in order to grant public funds for the construction of mosques.
"We are not allowed to subside the construction of religious buildings, but some elected representatives do it through cultural associations," Cope said, adding "We must stop this hypocrisy."
The law of 1905 must be reformed, Bedier said, deeming it unreasonable to oppose foreign financing of religious buildings while not doing anything for it.
