Al-Hayat: On the six- minister meeting
Syria-Regional, Politics, 1/22/2003
Well-informed Syrian sources told the London- based al-Hayat daily in its yesterday's issue that consultations are still ongoing to define the date for the meeting of the foreign ministers of countries, neighboring Iraq. The sources indicated that an agreement has not made yet to that effect. The sources added that the meeting might be held by the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
The sources denied what has been rumored about a visit by the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara to Turkey during the two coming days, noting that the issue of the 6- member summit is still under discussions and consultations.
In Cairo, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher said yesterday that the 6- member committee in which his country will take part will be held on Thursday in Istanbul at the level of the foreign ministers.
In Ankara, the Turkish NTV said that the Turkish prime minister Abdullah Gul will attend Istanbul meeting which will be held at the level of the foreign ministers, noting that the Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministers made contacts with the foreign ministers of Kuwait and Iraq and it is likely, in light of the results of Istanbul's meeting, the two ministers will take part in Damascus's meetings.
