Arab human rights NGOs set up alliance
Regional, Politics, 1/21/2003

Arab human rights NGOs and activists who held a conference in Cairo to update the Arab human rights charter, decided to set up an alliance of Arab human rights-advocacy organizations.

After the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 17th session of the permanent human rights commission of the Arab League, participants called for updating the Arab human rights charter, and conform it to the international agreements in the field.

They also recommended to the Arab League to involve national organizations and Arab experts in updating the charter, stressing the importance of setting up a special court of human rights protection.

The meeting called for holding a conference on human rights on the sidelines of the Arab Summit scheduled in Bahrain next March.

The conference opened Sunday under the chairmanship of Morocco's Khalid Naciri.
