Libya elected head of the human rights committee
Libya, Politics, 1/21/2003

Libya was elected this Monday chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, after Washington required that the decision be taken by secret ballot instead of the acclamation usually used in this UN body.

Najat Al Hajjai, Libya's delegate to the UN in Geneva, was finally elected by 33 votes, three votes against and 17 abstentions.

Libya was the candidate of the African group, which according to the rotating principle was the group to name a candidate for the chairmanship.

Washington which opposed the Libyan chairmanship, citing bad human rights records, requested that the chair be elected through secret ballot.
