Al-Shara arrived in Riyadh, consent for the Damascus meeting

In the framework of the Syrian move to spare the danger of war and revitalize the position of the countries of the region in confrontation of standing challenges, Saudi Arabia's King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah and the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami received messages from Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on latest developments on the region, from the Syrian deputy Premier and foreign minister Farouk al-Shara.

Al-Shara's talks in each of Riyadh and Tehran dealt with current challenges in the region, the Iraqi question and the efforts for peaceful solution, avoiding Iraq and the region a likely war as well as the forthcoming meeting in Damascus at the foreign ministers level for debating the Iraqi issue. Detailed news said that the Saudi crown prince Abdullah at al-Yamamah palace in Riyadh received yesterday the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara. The meeting was attended by the Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal and the deputy foreign minister Walid al-Mu'allim.

Talks dealt with the Iraqi issue and the Arab and international efforts made to find out a peaceful solution for it. View points were identical concerning the need of avoiding Iraq and the region, the war. The Saudi crown prince expressed his country's consent to convene a meeting for the foreign ministers of each of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Iran as well as Turkey in Damascus in order to debate means of settling the Iraqi crisis by peaceful means.

Al-Shara also met in Riyadh with Prince Saud al-Faisal and reviewed with him regional and international conditions and the critical conditions taking place in the region.
