Der Spiegel: News on Iraqi conditions for exile of Saddam Hussein
Iraq, Politics, 1/18/2003

The German magazine Der Spiegel said quoting diplomatic sources in Dubai and Cairo that Baghdad has out conditions for the evacuation of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to exile.

The magazine indicated that the list of the Iraqi conditions includes the departure of the American soldiers from the Gulf region, ending the mission of the UN inspection teams for eliminating the Iraqi weapons, and lifting the sanctions imposed on Iraq.

Baghdad also demands that the US and Europe vow not to judicially sue the Iraqi president and his aides.

According to the magazine, Baghdad, in addition, stresses the need that measures should be taken against Israel's production of mass destruction weapons. The magazine said that it received this information from three diplomats, two of them are Arabs and the third is a westerner. The German magazine said that the proposed country for the exile might be an African state.

However, Baghdad has strongly denied rumors since last week speaking about negotiations over the evacuation of the Iraqi President.

Last Wednesday, diplomatic sources and Arab analysists said that a joint Turkish- Arab initiative is trying to convince the Iraqi president to quit the authority and go to exile in order to avoid his country a war lead by the USA.

These sources added that these efforts stem from a Turkish initiative debated by the Turkish prime minister Abdullah Gul during his recent tour on the Arab states.

The sources explained that this proposal called for the departure of the Iraqi president to exile for guarantees that he will not be tried or sued.
