Turkey calls for regional summit in Ankara on the Iraqi crisis
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 1/17/2003

Turkey has invited several leaders of the Middle East states to convene a summit in Ankara next week in the context of its efforts to avoid an American war against Iraq.

The Turkish Anadolia news agency said that Turkey has prepared a draft declaration calling for a peaceful solution for the question of Iraq which Washington accuses of having nuclear weapons. The leaders of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iran are expected to take part in this summit and sign the said declaration.

The agency explained that the draft declaration was due to have been handed to the invited countries later in the day ( yesterday). A prominent Turkish diplomat confirmed what was stated by the agency.

Simultaneously, the Turkish prime minister Abdullah Gul is preparing for another Middle East tour next week, according to the same agency. But the countries he will visit are not so far known.

Earlier this month, Gul visited several capitals in the region in the framework of the Turkish efforts to build a united stand concerning a peaceful solution for the Iraqi crisis and the standing tension between Baghdad and Washington.

Meantime, and at the same level, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stressed on Wednesday that there are regional, Arab and non- Arab efforts -- in remarks to Turkey -- that are made to spare war against Iraq and reach a formula acceptable to both sides.
