Le Point: Al-Ammari: Algeria is under an embargo for terrorism fighting means
Algeria-France, Politics, 1/16/2003

The Algerian army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Muhammad al-Ammari said, in an interview with the French magazine Le Point, that his country is subjected to an "actual embargo for terrorism fighting means," noting that there is "a problem" in its relations with the French politicians. He also indicated the possibility of Algeria's request for an asylum seeking request from the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Al-Ammari said that the Algerian army "broke the backbone" of the Islamist groups, noting that "there is in the country only 1000 armed terrorists." He continued "we share with the security department in the French terrorism ( the counterintelligence department), the general directorate for foreign security (foreign intelligence) the same views and analysis on the dangers of terrorism. There is no problem on this side, rather with our friends the French politicians."

On the other hand, and replying to a question to the possibility of the Iraqi president will resort to Algeria, al-Ammari said "if he decided that, we will agree." On the other hand, the Algerian radio said yesterday that the Algerian parliamentarian Abdul Malik Bara had been missing missed since January 9 in France. Bin Bara is a representative for the Algerian community in Northern France. His traces were lost since last Thursday, according to the same source.

The radio added "that all search efforts failed, and the French police were requested officially to launch inspection operations for Bara."
