Jordanian - Qatari summit in Paris
Qatar-Jordan, Politics, 1/14/2003
A meeting was held in Paris yesterday between the Amir of Qatar, Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thaniand the Jordanian King Abdullah during which tension between the two states was eliminated.
He noted that this "meeting resulted into a detente in bilateral relations." The Jordanian TV stressed that this meeting was convened. It noted that King Abdullah "met today evening in Paris with Sheikh Hamad and during the meeting areas of cooperation between the two countries were reviewed."
According to the diplomatic source "the meeting was limited to discussing bilateral relations which has recently witnessed a sort of tension." He explained that King Abdullah showed more satisfaction following the meeting before he left Paris. The same gave no further explanations.
A diplomatic crisis erupted between Doha and Oman after the Qatari al-Jazeera broadcast a program which Jordan found as a humiliation to the royal family.
The crisis was complicated when a Qatari court sentenced to death the Jordanian journalist Firas al- Majali in October, 2002. The crisis moved to solution in November with the return of the Jordanian ambassador to Doha after he was summoned by Amman as a protest.
