Talibani calls for international conference to change Iraqi regime
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 1/11/2003

The chairman of the Kurdistani National Federation in Iraq, Jalal al-Talibani, has called for convening an international conference in order to change the regime in Iraq, noting that the current regime constitutes a danger on the security and stability in the region, even if it hands over mass destruction weapons.

During the press conference which was held in Tehran yesterday, al-Talibani said that this conference will decide how to change the regime and will supervise reformulating the Iraqi regime in a democratic way in the future. He explained that the real Iraqi opposition is the qualified side for such a change.

Talibani indicated that the proposals he gave to the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to avoid war against Iraq are: ending the dictatorship and forming a coalition Iraqi government and the special conditions and supervise free elections from which is to stem a constituent council to formulate the Iraqi regime in the future, and to hand over the mass destruction weapons the regime has to the UN.

Talibani added that the American interests and that of the Iraqi opposition at the current conditions are intermingled, which is to topple the Iraqi regime.

Talibani praised the relations existed between the Iraqi opposition and between Iran and the Arab states. He stressed that when the Iraqi opposition assumes power in Iraq, it will be a faithful friend to Iran and the region, noting that the national interest requires the elimination of the current Iraqi regime.
