UN brings back Syrian prisoner and the killed citizen
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/10/2003
The Israeli army yesterday returned back the body of a Syrian citizen and another Syrian who was arrested in an aggression carried out by Israeli soldiers in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on Wednesday. Israel justified its attack by saying that it suspected a Syrian sneaking operation but later on it gave another story.
Meantime the UN Disengagement Interim forces in the Golan UNDOF has opened an investigation in the aggression which was described by Syria as a violation to the truce agreement and an unjustified provocation, noting it is studying taking appropriate measures.
An Israeli military source said yesterday that Israel thought that the two Syrian soldiers who were wearing a civil uniform were not planning for an attack "They were in the area and they saw the Israeli soldiers and opened fire." Earlier, the Israeli army announced that its forces were exposed to a fire opened from a group of sneaked armed men who crossed from Syria to the territory controlled by Israel in the Golan Heights. The Israeli army announced that its forces retaliated by opening fire and killed one of the armed men and arrested the other.
In a statement UNDOF announced that an incident occurred on the Syrian- Israeli borders and resulted in killing one Syrian citizen and arresting the other and it also announced its success in the negotiations with the Israeli side to return back the Syrian prisoner back to Syria.
The statement added that UNDOF "opened an investigation to this effect in collaboration with the two sides ( the Syrian and the Israeli) and is now to return back the body of the killed Syrian at the site of the incident," noting that UNDOF could see the body and will hand it back to the Syrian authorities.
