Maher confers with Sharon's advisor
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 1/10/2003
The advisor of the Israeli Prime minister Ariel Sharon for the national security affairs Afraem Halevey held "unique" talks on Wednesday in Cairo with the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher on means of reviving the Palestinian- Israeli peace efforts. But the two failed to maintain an agreement on means of dealing with the situation.
Maher told journalists after his meeting with Halevey, the former chairman of the Israeli Mossad, that he had listened to the view point of the Israeli envoy, adding that "you will not deplore knowing that the two view points are not identical, since there are differences." Maher added "the meeting allowed the opportunity to express Egypt's views and its explanation for the current situation and the failure of the Israeli force policies which only resulted in more victims from two sides."
Maher continued "It is clear that the policy pursued by the Israeli side towards the Palestinians has failed and instead of increasing security it increased violence, and therefore these Israeli aggressive practices against the Palestinians should be halted."
Maher also stressed "it is necessary to put an end to these policies and to move towards serious negotiations between representatives for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples and officials from the two sides in order to put an end to this drastic situation and to resume serious negotiations conducive to final settlement agreed by all which is the foundation of two independent states living side by side in peace and security."
Maher said that during the meeting which was attended by President Mubarak's political advisor Osama al-Baz, talks did not tackle the inter- Palestinian consultation currently taking place in Cairo. He added that "Israel has nothing to do in this inter- Palestinian issue." For his part Halevey said that the talks with Maher allowed dealing with "several issues of mutual concern" and "all issues prime minister ( Ariel Sharon ) asked me to discuss. He refused to comment on the meeting which was held on Sunday between Maher and the chairman of the Left Meretz party Yusi Sarid and the former Labor Justice minister Yusi Belin who had joined Meretz.
