Arab meeting in Khartoum to discuss Sudan, Somalia; Arab working system
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 1/9/2003

Some 19 Arab foreign ministers will be meeting in Khartoum, Sudan, on Sunday to take part in three ministerial committees to discuss the Sudanese problems, both political and developmental, Somalia and means of developing a joint Arab working system. This will be, however, according to ideas proposed by Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

Sudan's initiative will discuss the Egyptian- Libyan initiative, IGAD's initiative and the interference made by other countries into Sudanese affairs, as well as financial and moral support given by countries to developing southern Sudan and the margined areas in Sudan. On this point, there are countries which give material support to the Sudanese Fund while others finance certain agreed upon projects.

However, the third committee will discuss the Somali issue in attaining stability and restoring normalcy and territorial integrity, as well as revitalizing the rebuilding Somalia Fund, approved at the Beirut recent Arab summit at USD 56 million.

Moreover, there is also an agreement to extend the work activity of this committee to help Ethiopia, despite the fact that it is not an Arab state, rather it is a "sisterly country" and will be supported in its current economic crisis. The Arab League had approved providing financial support to Ethiopia.
