American envoy in Sudan next week

A high ranking American official said that an envoy representing the American presidency will visit Sudan and the neighboring states next week at a time when the Sudanese government and the rebels will resume peace talks.

News reports quoted the American official who asked to be anonymous saying that John Danforth, former member of the US Senate, will visit Khartoum, Cairo, Nairobi and Asmara almost at the same time when the preliminary negotiations will be resumed between the two sides in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The American official said that the aim of the preliminary talks in Nairobi will be negotiations concerning the situation of three areas under disputes between the North and the south, and making a progress in difficult issues like sharing of authority and resources.

However, complete peace talks will be resumed in Mashakos, Kenya by the end of this January or the beginning of February.

Meantime, the US hosted unofficial workshops for the negotiators in December 2002 on how to administrate the first 100 days after signing a peace agreement.
