Mosque in Italy faces arson attempt
Regional-Italy, Local, 1/8/2003
Unidentified men tried to arson on Sunday night a mosque in the Italian town of San Remo, pouring gas on its gate and putting on fire, but only the gate was damaged.
The policemen who found on the site a piece of cloth sprayed with gas and a container cap are ruling out an act of "religious intolerance" but the local Islamic community union said it is actually an act of religious intolerance.
"Without seeking to exaggerate things, we are trying to protect ourselves by reinforcing security measures with bullet-proof glass and cameras, said the union chairman Roberto Hamza Piccardo, who is also supervising mosques in the region of Ligurie.
The region hosts some a 12,000 person-strong foreign population, including 4,000 Muslims.
