Pan-Islamic body calls for safeguarding Islamic sites in Palestine
Palestine-Regional, Politics, 1/8/2003
The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO, based in Rabat) on Tuesday called on the international community to safeguard Islamic monuments in Palestine.
The organization slammed the military orders issued by the Israeli occupation authorities to destroy the historical buildings and monuments in the city of Al-Khalil, Hebron.
International and regional organizations and institutions were urged to act rapidly and safeguard the monuments in Palestine in general and in Hebron in particular against the "barbarous practices of the Israeli authorities, ISESCO said in a release."
The Organization, which is an offshoot of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), noted that the Israeli military authorities in the West Bank decided to open a road between the Kiriat Arbaa and the Mosque of Hebron.
The project implies the destruction of several historical buildings.
The protection of the Palestinian heritage is a responsibility of humanity as a whole, ISESCO said, insisting that the international community in all its components should assume this responsibility.
