Four Sudanese killed in protests against revenge crime in Port Sudan
Sudan, Local, 1/8/2003

Four Sudanese were killed following clashes and acts of protests that took place in Port Sudan city following the killing of the secretary of Bani Amer tribe as he was slaughtered by one member of another tribe called al-Nourab in the court last Sunday.

The Sudanese daily al-Sahafi al-Dawli said yesterday that the Sudanese officials and representatives for the tribes are working to calm down the conditions in Port Sudan in order to prevent revenge acts between the two tribes, noting that the police and army forces were deployed in the city of fear of clashes between Bani Amer tribe and the other tribe. The Red Sea province government has imposed curfew during night time in the areas where clashes took place.

The Red Sea governor had imposed curfew in the city for one day and banned carrying weapons and knives, according to the emergency law and also summoned all aid and rescue forces in order to maintain security and stability, following the waves of protest from the family of the killed person.

In a statement read repeatedly by Port Sudan city local radio, the Red Sea governor said the police were able to arrest the killer, Ahmad Faqer Ahmad, and that he is from Kasla province and belongs to al-Nawarab tribe, one of the sub tribes of al-Hadnadowa tribe who admitted his crime before the judiciary. His trial started on Monday.
