Mykerinos pyramid to re-open to visitors
Egypt, Local, 1/4/2003
The smallest of the three Great Pyramids of Giza is to reopen to visitors at the start of January after being closed for a year for restoration, Egypt's antiquities office said Tuesday.
Zahi Hawass, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that engineers, archeologists and other experts had completed the restoration of the landmark, as well as cleaned up graffiti left by numerous visitors.
A new lighting system has been installed, as well as surveillance cameras to prevent visitors from writing on the walls.
Mykerinos was built in the fourth dynasty, between 2620-2500 BC, and is 66 meters (195 feet) high and 108 meters (324 feet) wide at its base.
