Yemeni president renews rejection to striking Iraq
Yemen-Iraq, Politics, 1/4/2003
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has renewed his rejection to a military attack against Iraq and interfering in its internal affairs. He stressed that there are no justifications to direct such an attack after Baghdad has responded to international resolutions and received the UN inspectors.
In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Hawadith ( events ) issued yesterday, the Yemeni president called for a unified Arab and international position in order to control the inclination to war and to solve the Iraqi issue, peacefully. He warned against the grave consequences resulting from the eruption of a war.
He expressed his strong regret over the continued double standard policy in dealing with issues in the region in leaving Israel in defiance to the international resolutions and to the peace principles in the Middle East at a time when threats are directed against Iraq, under the pretext of implementing the UN resolutions.
The Yemeni president denounced the "continued policy of repression and aggression committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian people."
He stressed the need of the "continued Palestinian Intifada as a legitimate resistance against the Israeli terrorism," noting that the Palestinian people have achieved several victories concerning their legitimate defense of themselves, holy shrines and usurped rights.
Saleh stressed that the Arab peace initiative which was approved by the Beirut Arab summit and based on the international law, foremost being the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab lands until June 4, 1967 border lines and the right of the Palestinian people to establishing their own independent state with Jerusalem as a capital constitutes the basic base to establish a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
