Sudanese rebels attack government army
Sudan, Politics, 1/4/2003
The Sudanese army has announced that the rebel forces attacked a position for workers in the al-Leir-Nanito road last Tuesday and killed three workers and wounded several army soldiers who were guarding the machinery working in construction of the road.
The official spokesman for the Sudanese forces Lt. Gen. Muhammad Bashir Suleiman said in a press statement on Thursday evening that another group of rebels occupied Rayak area to the west of al-Nweir in a flagrant violation to the agreement between the rebels and the government.
Lt. Gen. Suleiman denied that the army forces had attacked the movement, as the rebels claimed, stressing that the allegations of the rebels come in the context of the maneuvers to avoid abiding by agreements signed with the government.
Lt. Gen. Suleiman also renewed the commitment of the Sudanese forces to the option of peace on the ground of the government's strategy and its inclination towards achieving peace and development in Sudan.
