Sudanese peace talks to be resumed in Kenya this month
Sudan, Politics, 1/3/2003

The Sudanese rebels announced that the peace talks with the government will be resumed in the mid of this month in Kenya, in an attempt to reach a final solution for the civil war which has been taking place in the country since 19 years.

The spokesman for the rebels Samsoun Kawaji said that the mediators of the government's commission for fighting desertification IGAD- which sponsors the peace talks - set January 15 as a date to start the negotiations. He added that the they and the government agreed this date.

The spokesman stressed that the rebels will go to the talks with the intention to reach a just and permanent peace despite the fact that the government "violated the protocol of the ceasefire agreement."

Meantime, a government source denied what was stated by the rebels on that it was attacked by the government forces in western Higher Nile areas of southern Sudan.

Ali Ahmad Amin, the secretary general of the peace advisory at the Sudanese Presidency said that the rebels' forces were the side which started attacking the government forces when intercepting a caravan for the government forces in an attack launched by 300 members of the rebels at Bantino- Alleor road at the Higher Nile province and this resulted in killing several members of the government's army.
