Moroccan committee decries human cloning
Morocco, Health, 1/2/2003

The Moroccan Committee of Ethics of Casablanca on bio-medical research on Tuesday decried human cloning as a "crime against humanity."

"Human cloning is a serious threat and a crime against humanity, because it imposes on the newborn to the characteristics of parents, harming thus the identity, integrity and singularity of the human being amongst his likes," said the Committee, which depends on the public college of medicine of Casablanca.

If authorized, cloning will not be a progress for humanity, but rather will harm the sacredness of life, its morality as well as the dignity of humankind, the Committee said, adding cloning put into peril humanity's genetics which is the warrant of biodiversity.

The Committee, created in 1989, renewed a call to create a Moroccan national Committee of bioethics to regulate all genetic and biotechnological research in Morocco.
