Maher: Intifada, not on agenda of Palestinian factions
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 12/31/2002
Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher said Monday that halting the Palestinian Intifada was not on the agenda of the meeting of the Palestinian factions in Cairo.
Maher said the agenda tackles means of carrying on with the resistance to achieve the Palestinian goals, pointing out that the resistance should not be held captive to one style.
In statements, Maher said it is incumbent upon Arabs to help the Palestinian people in their uphill struggle against the Israeli aggression.
"If the agreements shed by both sides had been implemented honestly, they would have realized peace and established an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds (East Jerusalem) as its capital," Maher said.
Maher dismissed as groundless that there was an Egyptian peace plan put forward to the Palestinians and the Israelis, which suggested putting an end to the Palestinian operations in exchange for granting Palestinian President Yasser Arafat his freedom, pulling out the Israeli troops to the borders of September, 2002.
