Al-Assad in Algeria; Common stances

Syria's President Bashar Assad arrived in Algiers on Saturday. Talks with Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika dealt with the latest developments on the regional, International arenas as well as various aspects of the Arab situation particularly the Iraqi issue and the Palestinian situation.
Talks also dealt with the Arab-African relations and the Arab-European relations and the necessity to activate them in the service of the Arab causes. The two president also discussed ways of boosting bilateral relations in various fields.
Meantime, an Algerian TV report described President Bashar al-Assad's visit which began Saturday to Algeria as very important in the light of the current circumstances and challenges facing the Arab and Islamic nations necessitating coordination of stances. The report added that the Syrian-Algerian relations are deeply rooted and the historical events have made their destiny and future common. The standing bilateral agreements, the exchange of missions and tourist weeks and the activities of the Syrian-Algerian Joint Committee, have contributed to further strengthening of relations between the two states.
Also, Syria and Algeria have stressed their commitment to just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East on the basis of the Arab initiative which was approved at Beirut summit and based on the resolutions of international legitimacy and the principle of land for peace according to Madrid Reference in a way that ensures the restoration of all the Arab rights including the establishment of the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,and the Israeli withdrawal from all the Syrian Golan to June 4th 1967, border line. And from the rest of the occupied territories in South Lebanon.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday wrapping up President Bashar al-Assad' s visit to Algeria, the two presidents denounced the continued Israeli hostile policy against the Palestinian people and demanded the international community to take the necessary measures to protect the Palestinian people as well as to put pressure on Israel to halt its oppressive measures and to go back to the negotiating table from were thy were suspended unconditionally.
The two presidents expressed satisfaction for the Iraqi acceptance of the return of the international inspectors calling for the continuation of cooperation between the United Nations and Iraq for finding a settlement to all the pending issues through dialogue and peace means, demanding lifting the sanctions promptly on Iraq and end the suffering of the Iraqi people.
The two presidents praised the distinguished level to which the standing bilateral relations have reached,and expressed satisfaction for their development in various fields.
On the Moroccan level Algerian President Abdul-Aziz Butaflika briefed President al-Assad on the efforts which are being exerted to reactivate the Arab Maghreb Union with the aim of protecting the higher common interests of all Maghreb peoples.
