Egypt-Israel, Economics, 12/26/2002

The Egyptian government has stressed that the country is completely free from any agricultural pesticides produced or imported from Israel. In a message of assurances to parliament members, the government said it halted all acts and sorts of normalization with Israel in the agricultural section.

The Egyptian government added that dealing with Israeli agricultural researchers and experts stopped since the issuance of the government's decision to halt all contacts with Israel, except channels serving the Palestinian issue.

In the message which was sent by the Egyptian deputy premier and minister of agriculture Youssef Wali to the parliament, the Egyptian government denied the use of any pesticide in Egypt that is damaging for the health. He said that no pesticide is used unless it was used in the country of origin. He also indicated that all pesticides registered in Egypt are quickly dissolved in the plant and the soil.

The message also indicated that there is a great recession in the use of agricultural pesticides, thanks to the inclination to use alternatives and secured methods as biocontrols.

The message also said amounts of used pesticides in Egypt reached less than 4,000 tons after it was less than 30,000 tons annually, 20 years ago.
