At a Tunisian initiative, A UN Fund to fight poverty, boost development

A decisive step was achieved in the process of materializing the initiative of the Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on founding an international Solidarity Fund to combat poverty and setting the atmosphere of fraternity among people.

To this effect, the UN General Assembly ratified a draft resolution calling for the foundation of an International Solidarity Fund to eliminate poverty and boost human development in the developing countries.

On this occasion, the UN development program chairman March Maloush expressed his satisfaction over this ratification. He stressed his enthusiastic support for founding this Fund, an experience inspired by the national solidarity Fund set by the Tunisian President Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali. An initiative which helped decrease poverty in Tunisia to 4%.

The UN official expressed pleasure that the UN has approved this innovative mechanism at the international level. Meantime, Tunisia's Representative at the UN recalled the objective of the UN Fund for Solidarity. He called on the UN organization, the governments, the private sector, the UN organizations and establishments and e civil societies in general to give concrete contributions to this Fund so as to be active as soon as possible.

The UN delegated commended the initiative of the Tunisian President on this new initiative which aims at financing development process especially in less developed states.

Moreover, this event reflects a recognition by the UN on the success of the Tunisian experience in the area of social integration.
