Algeria hosts Maghreb federation meeting in January
Algeria-Maghreb, Politics, 12/24/2002
Algerian minister in charge of the Maghreb and African affairs Abdul Qader Masahal yesterday announced that the foreign ministers of the Arab Maghreb federation will be meeting on January 3rd in Algiers to push forward the launching of the federation which had postponed a summit that was due in June in Algeria.
Masahal explained that a meeting at the level of ministers delegated for Maghreb affairs in the federation's five member states ( Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria) will be held just one day before the meeting of the foreign ministers.
On November 17, the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika announced just three days from the date of convening the Maghreb summit that is was being postponed, in contrary to all expectations, and this was following a telephone call with Libya's Leader of the Revolution Colonel Muammar al Qathafi. Then, no new date for the summit which had not been held since 1994 was set, because of many reasons, especially the conflict in the Western Sahara between Algeria and Morocco.
The Moroccan foreign minister Muhammad Bin Issa had announced "it is not possible to put aside a problem targeting all Moroccans and related to the unity and independence of Morocco," in remarks to the conflict.
