Egypt prevents the circulation of the Lebanese Zawaya magazine
Egypt, Politics, 12/19/2002
Owner and chief editor of the Lebanese magazine Zawaya ( corners ), Pierre Abi Saab, has stressed that the Egyptian auditors prevented the circulation of the third issue of his magazine which was published in the mid of December because of the cover's picture.
In a statement Abu Saab said that "the al-Ahram distribution company, in charge of selling the magazine told him that they "banned the issue." He explained "the representative of the distribution company told me that the reason is the cover photo which had a photograph for the Lebanese photographer Lara Baladi she had earlier displayed in Cairo at 'Town House Hall' several months earlier."
The shot concerned is for an Oriental belly dancer in the dancing dress which shows great part of her breast with money thrown on the body as "Bakhshish." The statement added "we were surprised the decision of banning the distribution of the magazine in Egypt might be a result of misunderstanding, because the third issue of the magazine could not be insulting for the general norms and this is on the ground of the magazine's care to honor feelings and attitudes."
