Al-Shara - Straw meet on regional developments, bilateral issues
Syria-UK, Politics, 12/17/2002

A session of talks was held yesterday in London between Syria's Foreign Minister, Farouk Al-Shara and the British Foreign Secretary, Jack Starw at the British Foreign Ministry on the latest regional and international developments particularly the situation in the Middle East.

Al-Shara mentioned that the normal and logical introduction for changing the confrontation and escalation environments in the occupied territories is by the ending the Israeli occupation.

Al-Shara affirmed that the Arab peace initiative of Beirut Summit is a solid base which is based on the Arab unanimity, international coherence and the UN resolutions.

Al-Shara underlined the necessity of a more active British and European role be played to hold Israel the responsibility of putting an end to its aggression against the Palestinian people and to implement the international law.

On the Iraqi issue, the two ministers underlined that the political solution, not the military one, is the right path for ending the crisis with Iraq in line with the implementation of the UN resolutions and for guaranteeing the security and stability in the region.

Viewpoints were identical regarding the necessity of continuing the consultations between the two foreign ministries particularly in the frame of the UN Security Council.
