Egypt approves new African Union role

Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Ambassador Sami Yassin Abdel-Shaheed Monday asserted Egypt's endorsement of all steps and ideas on the activation of the African Union's role in the establishment of a unified continent.

In an interview with Sawt Al-Arab radio by telephone from Tripoli, the Egyptian diplomat, who is member of the Egyptian delegation to the extraordinary meeting of the African Union Foreign Ministers, said Egypt which was one of the founders of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now offers all assistance to the new African Union.

"The extraordinary meeting, which starts in the Libyan capital Monday, will tackle many proposals that aim at accelerating the African Unity probing the establishment of an African government and promoting political, military and economic bodies," he added.
