Morocco, Spain voice will to promote sound, coherent ties

Morocco and Spain on Wednesday voiced shared will to promote sound, clear and coherent relations between them.

This came in a joint release made public at the end of a meeting in Madrid between Moroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister, Mohamed Benaissa and Spanish peer, Ana Palacio.

The release said Rabat and Madrid agreed to give a new impetus to their bilateral relations on sound, clear and coherent bases and to reinforce dialogue for full normalization of their relations.

The two sides made a critical and detailed inventory of all pending issues and difficulties looming on their relations, the release said, adding the two parties agreed to promote a positive approach to their ties, an approached oriented towards the future and founded on reinforced, sincere, deep and thorough dialogue likely to restore trust between the two neighbors.

Benaissa and Palacio convened to jointly define a platform of entente to give a new impetus to Moroccan-Spanish ties in accordance with the spirit of a bilateral Treaty of Neighborliness and Cooperation, signed in 1991.

Given Morocco and Spain's role in regional peace, security and cooperation, the two sides renewed will to have privileged relations, based on mutual respect, trust and shared strategic interests, the release said, adding Morocco and Spain equally agreed to set up working groups on specific issues.

The groups will meet shortly at different levels.

The two foreign ministers also agreed to meet in Rabat in the beginning of the year.

The release was made public at the end of a three-hour meeting between Benaissa and Palacio over means to diffuse the tension that prevailed over Rabat and Madrid's relations over the past months.
