Canada imposes total ban on the Hizbullah party; terrorism cited
Lebanon-Canada, Politics, 12/12/2002
Canada has followed the US step and imposed yesterday a total ban on the Hizbullah party, under the pretext that the secretary general of the Hizbullah part, Hassan Nasrullah had called the armed struggle against Israel.
The Canadian foreign minister Bill Graham said " I think this 'ban' will send a signal to the Hizbullah party on that its assertion to use terrorism as an international instrument is unacceptable." In 2001, Canada banned the military wing of the Hizbullah party, but had resisted along months the pressures aiming to accuse the political wing of the party, which Graham had described as a legal social and political movement.
The Canadian Attorney General, Wayne Easter, said in a statement that the Hizbullah party, the Kurdistani workers party and the Japanese Um Shenreiko sect, were added to the list of banned organizations in Canada. He added "The Canadian government has reached the conclusion that these entities are deliberately conducting terrorist practices." He explained that the one who belongs or supports these organizations will be jailed at least for ten years.
Meantime, the executive director of the national council of the Canadian- Arab relations, Mazin Shueib, said that there is no evidence that the Hizbullah party has activities in Canada. He denounced the role played by the Jewish Benai Bruth organization in influencing this decision
