Syria-USA, Politics, 12/12/2002

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received on Wednesday Director of the Middle East Center for Peace and Economic Cooperation in the United States, Wayne Owens and an accompanying delegation.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and the US.ambassador to Syria.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the current issues in the region in addition to bilateral relations between Syria and the United States.

The president stressed during the meeting that the loss of hope, rights, dignity and sovereignty are the main factors behind the escalation of violence and conflict and that stability and security will not be established unless the occupation ends and the rights and lands are restored to their legitimate owners.

The president also stressed that Syria is working with the international group for the sake of reaching a peaceful solution in Iraq and have it avoid, along with the region, a war no body knows where it may lead, and that any act in Iraq should be done in line with the UN evaluation and resolutions.
