Egypt-USA, Politics, 12/10/2002

The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher yesterday in Cairo met with the ambassadors of the USA to Egypt and Israel David Welsh and Daniel Kurtz, respectively and exchanged with them views on latest developments in the Middle East region.

Welsh told journalists in conclusion of the meeting that the " meeting comes in the framework of the continued care to meet in order to review latest issues in the region and matters of joint interests." He added that during the meeting views were exchanged, in particular about the Palestinian- Israeli problem and the efforts made to solve them as well as latest developments concerning the Iraqi question. He added that the two sides discussed bilateral relations between the US and Egypt and means of giving them a push forward in all walks.

For his part Kurtz, who is in a private visit to Egypt said that the meeting covered the efforts aiming at ending violence and establishing peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Kurtz who served as a US ambassador in Cairo for many years before he was transferred to Israel said he briefed Maher with the situation in Israel and the region from his own perspective. He denied that his visit to Cairo ho be for carrying a message from the Israeli side, saying that he only expresses " the view point of the government I represent."
