Al-Assad confers with US Senators
Syria-USA, Politics, 12/10/2002

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received on Monday two US. Senators, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden (D-DE) and senior Republican committee member Chuck Hagel (R-NE).

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and the US. Ambassador to Syria Theodore Qattouf.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the current issues in the region particularly those connected with Iraq and the Israeli-Arab conflict.

The president underlined that the peoples in the region feel concerned regarding the US. policies which pursue priorities different in essence from the peoples' interests and aspirations causing anger to grow against the US. policy.

The US senators for their part stressed the necessity for the intensification of dialogue and understanding to face fanaticism regardless of its source.
