Ali Ferzat receives 2002 Dutch Prince Claud Award
Syria-Holland, Local, 12/5/2002

Renowned Syrian Caricaturist Ali Ferzat will receive 2002 Prince Claus Award of Holland. On Wednesday December 11, 2002, Prince Claus Awards will be presented in the Ridderzaal ( Hall of Knights ) in the Hague. Prince Claus will present the 2002 Principal Award of 100,000 EUROS. This year's Principal Award celebrates Moroccan "Berber" culture and language.

Moreover, the 2002 awards committee focused on languages and transcultural forms of expression. Languages were not only interpreted as being spoken or written forms of communication. They were also metaphorically understood as including a broad range of vocabularies, e.g. rap, salsa or combat sports. These vocabularies are often rapidly adopted by different cultures, becoming communal forms of expression, universal languages that build bridges between different identities.

In this context and in line with this background, that the world famous Senegalese musician Youssou N' Dour will perform at the awards ceremony. Youssou N'Dour is also one of this year's laureates and will be presented with a Prince Claus Award during the ceremony. He will also perform with young musicians whom he coaches "They rap in Wolof," the living language of the streets in Dakar.

Besides the principal Award this year, nine Prince Claus Awards of 25,000 EUROS will be presented to the following laureates: Youssou N. Dour ( 1959, Senegal ), musician; Marcelo Arauz ( 1934, Bolivia), music festival organizer, promoter of cultural heritage; Ali Ferzat ( 1951, Syria), cartoonist; Ferreira Gullar ( 1930, Brazil ), writer, poet, scriptwriter, art critic; Lembaga Kajian Islam dan Sosial ( LKIS) ( became official in 1993, Indonesia ), institute for Islamic and social studies; Virginia Peres- Ratton ( 1950, Costa Rica ), art historian, critic and curator; Walter Tourrnier ( 1944, Uruguay ), animator - film maker and Wu Liangyong ( 1922, China ) Architect and urban designer.

Worthy mentioning that Prince Claud Award are presented annually to artists, thinkers and cultural organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin American and the Caribbean. Outstanding quality is an essential condition for an award; the most important consideration when making an award is the positive effects of a laureate's work on a wider cultural or social field. The Prince Claus Fund interprets culture in a broad sense to encompass all kinds of artistic and intellectual disciplines, science, media and education Tomader.
