Al-Sharq: American conditions to the Palestinian authority to settle the Arab- Israeli conflict

The Lebanese daily al-Sharq issued on December 2nd the text of an American message which had reached the Palestinian authority and includes American conditions to settle the Arab- Israeli conflict.

The said message includes items, the most important of which is that the Arab states' support the US proposed "road map" through urging the Palestinians to deal with this plan, and that the Arab political support be directed towards an elected Palestinian government by a President who is not Yasser Arafat, and that the operations carried out by extremist Palestinians against the Israelis not to receive an Arab support and that the Arab states to give a cover for the Israeli- Palestinian security coordination through healing an Egyptian- Jordanian participation in this process.

The conditions also state that Syria should request the Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movements to halt their works to prevent the obstruction of negotiations when they take place, and that all financial aids and transfers from Arab societies and states to be sent to the Palestinian ministry of finance only after the formation of the government, and that Egypt and Jordan to return back their ambassadors to Tel Aviv after the Palestinians and the Israelis proceed in the dialogue and to freeze the Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Also among the stipulated items is the Syrian and Lebanese consent to take part in an international peace conference to be held by the end of 2003 which will be dedicated for the establishment of a Palestinian state and starting negotiations to solve the Arab- Israeli conflict according to UN security council resolutions 242 and 338 and the land for peace formula.
