Talibani in Kuwait, Moussa received al-Barazani representative
Iraq-Kuwait, Politics, 12/3/2002

Kuwai'ts minister of foreign affairs Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah met with the leader of the Kurdistani National Federation Jalal al-Talibani in the presence of the minister of state for foreign Sheikh Sabah al-Khaled al-Sabah.

Last week, the Kuwaiti officials met with the chairman of the Higher Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim, who was on an official visit to Kuwait.

Talibani's visit to Kuwaiti came at an official invitation, which is the second since the Gulf war in 1991, in the framework of the "desire of the two sides to exchange view points and strengthen cooperation," according to Talibani, who stressed "full support for the causes of Kuwait in order to guarantee the security of its territories and its sovereignty and the issue of the Kuwaiti prisoners in Iraq." Upon his arrival in Kuwait yesterday, Talibani said that UN resolution 1441 "is the beginning of the end for the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in case he will not abide by eliminating mass destruction weapons and applying democracy in Iraq;" hoping that an "Iraqi democratic parliamentary federation honoring the rights of all nationalities will be established."

He added that "the Kurds will take part in the war against repression, if the objective is to achieve democracy and freedom." He indicated, simultaneously, the possibility that Turkey ( Washington's strategic ally) will play (a positive role) in founding the democratic regime.

Meanwhile, Arab diplomatic sources unveiled yesterday that the Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa met at the beginning of this week with Omar Butani, the personal representative of Masoud al-Barazani, the chairman of the Kurdistani democratic party, in a meeting which was not the first between Moussa and sides in the Iraqi opposition.

The diplomatic sources said that Moussa met last Saturday with Boutani, as a representative of the Party in the Arab region, who briefed Moussa on the efforts made by the Iraqi opposition to unify their ranks through the conference to be held on December 13 in London.

The sources continued that Boutani stressed to Moussa the position of the Iraqi opposition, and the Kurdish opposition in particular which is care "to preserve Iraq's territorial integrity and that there is no intention to divide Iraq by any side of the Iraqi opposition." The sources indicated that the meeting was held "secretly because of the sensitivity of the issue." The spokesman for the AL Hesham Youssef abstained from confirming the meeting nor denying it.
