Mubarak calls on Israel to resume negotiations; An envoy for Mistnag meets with Maher
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 12/2/2002

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak yesterday directed a call to "Israel's people and leadership" to join negotiations on the final solution with the Palestinians before it is too late.

Meantime, the Israeli parliamentarian for the Israeli Labor party Yusi Kats on Sunday held talks in Cairo with the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher and Mubarak's advisor for political affairs Osama al-Baz.

Mubarak said during a celebration marking "al-Qader night" "I extend a call to the leadership and people in Israel to realize before it is too late that the use of force in an attempt to impose security will only lead to increasing violence and further bloodshed from the two sides."

Mubarak added that the "chance is still there before the Israelis to amend the track and to seek sincerely to proceed on the path for a genuine peace, security and stability through joining direct political negotiations on the final solution, together with all its elements and on the foundation of the sovereign Palestinian state."

On the other hand, Kats told journalists in conclusion of his meeting with Maher that the "aim of the visit is to convey a message from the chairman of the Israeli Labor party American Mitsang to the Egyptian President," noting that "view points were exchanged regarding what is taking place in the region, the peace process and the vision of the Labor Party for the settlement." He added that the "second objective is to open a new channel between the Labor party and the Egyptian leadership," stressing "the importance of that under the overshadowing conditions because it opens the question of opening a dialogue with the peace camp inside Israel."

Maher, for his part said that Egypt does not interfere in the Israeli elections battle, but seeks that all should realize that the policy of using power will not (yield results)." He added that Kats explained "Mitsing's policy and his desire to resume the peace process and to create confidential and positive atmospheres and establishing confidence between the Palestinians and the Israelis."
