Al-Shara to the UN: Syria committed to helping the Palestinian cause
Syria-Regional, Politics, 12/2/2002
Syria has affirmed her continuation in defense of the cause of the Palestinian People and their rights and appealed to the Security Council and the international community to pay attention to the "Israeli danger and practices in the occupied territories, in flagrant defiance to the resolutions of the UN and the international charters."
This came In a message addressed by foreign minister Farouk Al-Shara on Saturday to the head of the UN committee concerned regarding the rights of the Palestinian People.
The message indicated that "despite the Israeli oppressive practices against the Palestinian People, the latter refused the Israeli unjust conditions in the negotiations and did not refrain from offering the sacrifices through the heroic Intifada for the establishment of their sovereignty on their national soil and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."
Al-Shara affirmed that Israel was responsible for the abortion of the peace process, stressing that it is Israel which has always refused to implement the security council resolutions 242 and 338.
For his part, the secretary general of the UN, Kofi Annan, described the day of solidarity with the Palestinian People as a day of mourning and sadness because of the human and material losses suffered by the Palestinian people during the past period.
In a communique read for him before the U.N, Annan added that, during the past period, the Israeli authorities had been using the oppressive force and acts of assassination and detention, something that raised the anger and despair among the Palestinians.
He indicated that the day in which the Palestinians can enjoy their inalienable rights, their right to self-determination and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state would come soon.
