Jordanian Islamists annoyed by prince Nayef; Curfew lift from Maan
Jordan, Politics, 11/27/2002

The Jordanian authorities lifted the curfew imposed on the city of Maan, at a time when an opinion poll showed that most of the Jordanian are displeased with the way the government dealt with the incidents in Maan

The Jordanian daily al-Rai said that the governor of the city of Maan Muhammad Breikat ordered on Monday the lifting of the curfew imposed on Sunday on this city which is of a populations of 70,000. This measure permits the reopening of government buildings, schools and universities, but trade centers remained closed despite of that because atmospheres of tension are still prevailing on the city.

The Jordanian security authorities are still searching for the main convict Muhammad al-Shalabi, known as Abu Sayyaf, the member in an Islamic group which is accused of seeking to kill the commander of police in Maan, according to the paper.

Meantime, an opinion poll carried out by a Radio station in Jordan concerning Maan incidents said that 52% of those who took part in the opinion poll are discontent with the way the government dealt with this case. While 28 % voiced support for the measures taken by the government and considered these measures as excellent, while 11% considered that the way the government dealt with the issue was "good" and other 9% said it is "acceptable." On the other hand, Jordanian Islamic leaderships criticized the statements made by the Saudi Ministry of the Interior Prince Nayef in which he described the (Ikhwan al Muslimin (Muslim Brothers) group as the " source of the blight the Islamic world lives in."

The secretary general of the Islamic work front, Hamza Mansour, said that statements of Prince Nayef "lacks credibility and objectivity. The Muslim brothers group, since its foundation, proved to be the bright picture for Islam." The Kuwaiti daily al-Seyasah quoted Prince Nayef as noting aids given by Saudi Arabia to several leadership of the Muslim Brothers groups in many Arab countries and how these leaderships denied what Saudi Arabia had given them, citing an example of the Sudanese Islamists Hassan al-Turabi who became a critic of Saudi Arabia.
