Butaflika calls on the government to carry out partial local elections
Algeria, Politics, 11/27/2002
Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika has called for proceeding with the partial local elections in the municipalities where results of voting were canceled because of acts of riots, stressing the need that these elections must be held under best conditions.
Before a meeting for the Algerian Cabinet, Butaflika announced his decision to disseminate the report of the higher committee to monitor local elections. He called on the government and all commissions to work according to the recommendations of this committee in order to improve conditions for running the elections, enhancing transparency. He stressed that the local elections which were held in October would help in taking the country ultimately from the crisis and liberate it from the system of the provisional period administrations.
Simultaneously, the Algerian President stressed the need of taking all measures to revitalize the role of the Algerian Bourse (stock market) to play its due role in accelerating the economy.
On the other hand, Algerian dailies said that five gunmen and one civilian were killed on November 24 in acts of violence in Algeria.
The same sources said that the security forces killed two gunmen in Babour mountain and two others in an area close to Ein Olmen in Stef area.
