Algeria killed al-Qaida official in Africa

The US has expressed its "concern" over the intensified situation in al-Qabael (berber) area in Algeria which have been witnessing violence since 19 months. For this purpose, the US delegated one of its officials to Teze Ozo province in order to hold talks with political sides and members representing the civil society concerning the situation of the region.

Meantime, the Algerian official news agency said that the Algerian security forces killed in September al-Qaida official in northern and West Africa, Imad Abdul Wahid Ahmad Elwan.

The US embassy in Algeria said yesterday that the political advisor for the US ambassador Janet Senderson on Sunday held the visit to Teze Ozo where she had met with the leaders of the Qabael area and representatives for the coalition for culture and democracy and the socialist forces front, as well as a group of lawyers and the chairman of Teze Ozo municipality.

The Algerian official news agency quoted "a well-informed" source that Imad Abdul Wahid Elwan, better known as "Abu Muhammad" was killed on September 12 in an ambush by the security forces in Marwanah town in Batnah province, 430 Km southern east of the capital Algiers.

The agency added that Abdul Wahid, of the Yemeni nationality was in charge of running al-Qaida operations in the coastal and al-Maghreb area, noting that his identity was disclosed following lengthy investigations carried out by its specialized departments. The agency added that al-Qaida organization sent Abu Muhammad to Algeria in order to coordinate with the al-Salafeyah group for fighting and the Call led by Hassan Hattab. The group was founded in 1998 at the support of Osama Bin Laden.

On the other hand, an Algerian official statement said that the Algerian cabinet on Sunday studied and ratified a draft law on eliminating any violation of the multilateral chemical weapons which was signed up by Algeria in 1995, pertinent to manufacturing, storing and using of chemical weapons and working for destroying them.
