Saudi FM, Atomic Energy official in Cairo today
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 11/25/2002

Egypt has called on the US "to maintain an agreement with other members of the Quartet committee for peace and countries concerned on efforts that will be conducive to a peaceful settlement on the grounds declared by the Arab states's peace initiative which can achieve peace through establishing two independent states," and this will be during the meeting to be held today between the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher and the US ambassador in Cairo David Welsh upon the arrival of the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal to Cairo today, where he will be meeting also today with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The US ambassador announced that the meeting with Maher will be made in the framework of getting acquainted with the results of the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers and the results of talks between Presidents Hosni Mubarak and Bashar al-Assad during President Mubarak's recent visit to Damascus. He expressed "regret" over the deterioration of conditions because of the "terrorist attacks and the escalation of violence."

Al-Faisal's visit to Cairo was decided amid reports which referred to that the US had asked certain Arab states including Egypt and Saudi Arabia to join an international coalition it wants to establish in the event of a war against Iraq.

Within the same context, President Mubarak will be also meeting with the director of the International Agency for Atomic Energy Muhammad al-Barad'e who will also discuss with the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa, the Arab request to increase the number of Arab inspectors in the UN inspection teams for the Iraqi weapons.

In this regard, Moussa stressed the low chance for the participation of Arab inspectors in the committee in charge of monitoring and inspecting the Iraqi mass destruction weapons ( UNMOFIK ) because of the existence of "timely and technological constraints.
